Advertising and affiliate disclosure
This site is free to use and costs money to run. This page sets out how that is paid for, and — more importantly — what separates the funding from the figures.
Advertising
Pages on this site carry advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure those ads, and may personalise them based on your prior visits to this and other sites. Our privacy policy covers what that means for your data and how to opt out.
We do not choose which advertisers appear, and an advertiser appearing on a page has no bearing on anything written on it. If an advertisement for a hot water installer appears beside a comparison in which that installer's product does badly, that is the system working as intended.
Affiliate links
There are currently no affiliate links on this site. If that changes, the rules below apply and this page will say so with the date it changed.
- Every affiliate link will be labelled as one, in the place where it appears, not only on this page.
- No affiliate relationship will ever affect a ranking, a running cost figure, or which options appear in a comparison. The calculators are driven by data files that contain no commercial information at all.
- Nothing will be recommended solely because it pays a commission.
What is not for sale
Placement in a comparison. Position in a ranking. A more favourable default assumption. A system type being included or excluded. The wording of a conclusion.
There is no mechanism by which these could be bought even if someone wanted to: the rankings are computed at page load from the physics and the published energy prices, and the underlying data files contain system specifications and government rates and nothing else. You can see this yourself — the files are served to your browser in plain text.
No lead generation
This site does not collect quote requests, does not pass details to installers, and has no arrangement with any installer network. There is no form on any calculator page. The only form on the site is the contact form, which goes to a person and nowhere else.
This is worth stating explicitly because almost every other Australian hot water calculator is a lead capture tool. If you have used one of those, you may reasonably be waiting for the form to appear. There isn't one.
Frequently asked questions
Does advertising influence which system the calculator recommends?
It cannot. The comparison is computed in your browser from the physics and the published energy rates for your state, using data files that contain no commercial information. Advertising is served into a separate slot by Google and neither we nor an advertiser can reach the calculation.
Why run ads at all?
Because the alternative funding models are worse. Charging for access would put a public-interest calculator behind a paywall; lead generation would put a commercial interest directly inside the results, which is the failure mode this site was built to avoid. Advertising is the least entangled option available.
How do I turn off personalised advertising?
Google's ad settings at adssettings.google.com let you turn off ad personalisation across every site that uses Google advertising, including this one. You can also opt out of third-party vendor cookies at optout.aboutads.info. Ads will still appear; they will simply be less targeted.
